In December, Three Imaginary Girls, everyone's favorite Seattle indie-pop blog, hosted a reader's poll to determine the best Northwest releases of '08. As of Monday, we are pretty darn stoked to find out that New Faces' "Two Years" beat out Fleet Foxes' Self-Titled album for the #1 Spot! New Faces performed a killer three-song ("Impulse", "Cracks" and "Miss Kiss Kiss Bang Bang") set to a crowd of about 500 of Seattle's musically concerned citizens.

Hey Everyone!

Exciting news! If you havn't already heard via our newsletter (which you can have delivered fresh to your inbox by signing up here), tomorrow at The Paramount the mayor will be unveiling his new 12-year plan to help Seattle evolve under the tagline "The City of Music".

The best part is: New Faces were asked to play to represent how the city's sound has evolved over the years. (Blue Scholars will be there too!). We're pretty excited about it! This event is free and open to the public, but you must RSVP to filmandmusicoffice@seattle.gov with your name and email address, and those of your guests (if you are bringing any).
Everyone that comes will receive an awesome promotional poster (see above image). This should be a lot of fun! Hope to see you there!

When did the band form and how did you all meet?
2003 or 2004... i think, im not good with dates.
I met mark and eric when my brother tried out for the band, when they had another name, i knew sean for shows around chambersburg. And i've never met dan in real life...

Where does the name of the band come from?
The great artic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton

Who are your biggest musical influences?
Can, The Cravats, Faust, This Heat, Omega Tribe, Wildildlife

Do you have any other major influences? Personal? Political? Literary?
Other people are a big influence, maybe not musically, but i've seen a lot of people mess up in life and it certainly has had an effect on how i live mine.

Is this something you’ve all always wanted to do, or were there other things you were set on becoming, like pilots or…acrobats?
When i was real little i wanted to be a bunch of things and never really pursued any of them, until i learned how to play guitar. As far as "careers" go this is the only thing i could ever imagine myself doing.

What was the weirdest thing to ever happen to you guys on tour?
When we played in Indianapolis once only 2 people showed up. iIt wasn't weird as much as it was frustrating.

Any creepy, crazy or stalker-ey fans yet?
I hope not...

Have you ever written any songs that you are truly embarrassed by now?
Maybe alone in my room but not in the band.

If you could only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Wildildlife's "Six". It's what i always listen to when i can't make up my mind. I decided the other day that it is my 2nd favorite album of all time.

If your music was a shape, what would it be?
I slept through geometry...

If you were to do some crazy unrelated side project, what would it sound like?
Some weird psychedelic drone/stoner music mixed with post-rock stuff like Do Make Say Think but much heavier and a lot of noise experimentation

Favorite band that you’ve played a show with?
Skeletonbreath... they is the shit!

If you could have any superpower, what would it be, and why?
Teleportation would be pretty bad ass. That way i could sleep later.

What is your dream show to play (who would you play with, and where)?
Wildildlife, Skeletonbreath, and us in some crowded basement.

Loveless Goes to Pitchfork

You’ll no doubt be reading all about this weekend’s Pitchfork Festival held in Chicago. You’ll read all about the performances and who everyone’s favorites were.

However, I will give you a behind the scenes account of everything that I did and my adventure in Chicago. For the past two years, I have flown to Chicago to work at the festival to help Loveless friend and Tom Brosseau’s manager Mary Jones. Mary is the Production Manager for the festival who pretty much rocks.

This year, I was helping with artist check-in, which is pretty cake job. It’s always interesting to meet road weary bands and hear the stories they have about their tour so far. The other kick ass thing about my job was driving the golf cart around the festival. I’ve now realized that if I ever decide to quit working in the music biz, I have a career as a golf cart driver.

Here are some of the things I did this weekend!

Friday
I went food shopping for some of the items on the Public Enemy rider plus went through the KFC drive thru for some finger lickin’ good chicken!

Now I don’t get star struck too often, but I will say it was super cool to meet Chuck D. He came over to the area to check in, said hello and shook my hand. Super nice guy. Sadly, I didn’t get to meet Flava Flav, but I did see him when he walked in. I haven’t really watched “Flavor of Love” but I did laugh my when one of the people I was working with said “Who wouldn’t want to marry him?” as he walked by. We all know what my Tivo will be recording next week!

Saturday
Saturday there was a lot more to do as most artists checked in that day. Saturday involved me driving artists and their gear back and forth to their stages. Did I mention that I want to be a professional golf cart driver? It also involved me just taking the golf cart for a spin around the festival grounds.

It rained like it never rained before and I got stuck drinking at the after party with a massive thunderstorm so I couldn’t leave… so I just had to keep drinking free 312 Goose Island beer.

Sunday
All you really need to know is that Julia Stiles was standing next to me during Dinosaur Jr. I really wanted to take her for a ride on the golf cart, but I didn’t get a chance to ask her. She left before their set was over. I'm not sure what my obsession is with the golf carts, but I now what to go golfing... and I don't even like golf!

My festival ended up with me at the after party discussing hair metal albums that came out in 1989 and trying on Pitchfork idol Ryan Schreiber's sunglasses. He has nice sunglasses and there were a lot of hair metal bands in 1989.

Then it was off to the airport for a 6:00 am flight. Still recovering from last night's events, I was a little worse for the weary. Luckily, no one could tell and I was able to get on the plane under the radar!

All in all it was a great weekend. I met a ton of cool new people, work with some really kick ass people and did see some amazing bands.

There's a reason I've gone to as many music festivals as I have and why I will continue to go whenever possible.

The Shackeltons E-Interview Pt. 3: Mark

Here is the third installment of the Shackeltons interview series. This time all of your queries about the The Shackeltons lead singer extraordinaire Mark Redding shall be answered...as long as they are the same as my queries, that is.

When did the band form and how did you all meet?
We live in a small town (chambersburg, pop: 25,000). The streets echo of loneliness and small town fevers. We met under the covers of darkness one night at an underground musician's railroad. Eric and Justin were being moved to canada, where musicians are free men, and not slaves. Dan was working for the underground railroad and Sean was just hanging around because thats really all Sean knows how to do. I was protecting the site.

Where does the name of the band come from?
I was reading the book, "The Endurance: The Adventure of Ernest Shackleton" and found the story to be full of courage and the glory of the human spirit- faith, hope, and love. It made sense to name the band in honor of ernest and his men. I just happened to misspell the name (changed the "e" and the "l" around) when registering the name for our website.

Who are your biggest musical influences?
Otis Redding, Johnny Cash, The Carter Family, Early Gospel Music, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, and my mom.

Do you have any other major influences? Personal? Political? Literary?

My mom, my country, other countries, Charles Dickinson, my town, Emily Dickinson, the holy spirit, widows, orphans, clean homes, sorrow, dictionaries, people who try hard in thier jobs, vegtables, grains, pollen, bees, bikes, kids, grandparents, parents, breaking hearts, fainting knots, lakes, mountains, rubies, my seven siblings, green trees, open fields, basketball, tennis, badminton, radios, no televisions, plays, comedy, family, church, dogs in other's care, books on cd, other musicians who have tender hearts, and a good movie on an airplane.

Is this something you’ve all always wanted to do, or were there other things you were set on becoming, like pilots or…acrobats?
When i was a little boy, i wanted to be a trucker. It kinda came true, im in a band. But this is something I have always dreamed of doing. My other dreams are going to be revealed in the years to come. I dont want to ruin the suprise. You just wait and see.

What was the weirdest thing to ever happen to you guys on tour?
We played a record store in indianapolis and two guys came. The store photographer and a guy who didnt know we were playing. We sold zero cds. A week later justin has to take a crap. We are in the middle of North Dakota. We pull off at some small town with a bar. He doesnt want to go in. I tell him its his only option. He follows me in. The bartender plays our cd. We sell 4 cds and sign posters. So much for playing hipster record stores. Lets just take craps in small town bars....

Any creepy, crazy or stalker-ey fans yet?
Not sure if we are pretty enough for that.

Have you ever written any songs that you are truly embarrassed by now?
Yes. But not with this band. I'm an embarrassing guy.

If you could only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I cant imagine that. Maybe i would like to hear my mom singing songs. It would be better to hear my mom's voice than some stranger's.

If your music was a shape, what would it be?
Bubble gum. You chew it as you go.

If you were to do some crazy unrelated side project, what would it sound like?

When did the band form and how did you all meet?
We formed sometime in late 2004. Justin’s brother was our original bass player. Justin took his place when he went away to University of North Carolina, Ashville. And Sean replaced our other drummer in late 2005.

We were in different bands in the area and we decided to make good music, or what we though to be good music, and even though influentially we were different in music we all shared the same respect for the art and shared a common bond with our understanding of it’s purpose and power.

Where does the name of the band come from?
Sir Ernest Shackleton.

An explorer who sought to walk across Antarctica with 27 men and failed to do so, but brought hope to a country ravaged by a world war with their story of endurance through the cold and the cruel. All 27 men survived, but ironically died in the next world war (WW2).

Who are your biggest musical influences?

The line up would be Damien Jurado, Lake of Dracula, and Sigur Ros. Either Ian Svenonius, or Henry Rollins would open up with their spoken word, and we, the shackeltons, would just play one song, that would be a combination of all of our songs, but it’d be only 5 minutes long.

The Shackeltons E-Interview Pt. 1: Eric

Hello Everyone!
Sadly for this blogger/intern, the last time Loveless band The Shackeltons were in Seattle, there wasn't time to interview them. Since I am far away from the emerald city for the summer and will unfortunately not be able to see their sure-to-be-awesome Bumbershoot set (Sunday 8/31, 2:30 PM, Rockstar Stage, check it out!), I'm doing an e-interview with each of the individual band members.
Feel like you want to know the members of The Shackeltons a little better? You're in luck! There will be an installment for each of the five band members, starting with Eric!

When did the band form and how did you all meet?
I've known Mark for about 12 years (I don't remember how we met). I have been in a band with him for 6 years. As the band changed, we slowly incorporated the other guys in the band. We met Dan & Sean through other bands & we met Justin through his brother, Josh, our old bass player.

Where does the name of the band come from?
That's a Mark question.

Who are your biggest musical influences?

I love old surf rock & old punk rock. I have been listening to a lot of Television. I also have studied classical guitar for years. I have been playing a lot of Fransisco Tarrega.

Do you have any other major influences? Personal? Political? Literary?

My wife.

Is this something you’ve all always wanted to do, or were there other
things you were set on becoming, like a pilot or…an acrobat?
In college I majored in Music Therapy & I have graduate credits in Music Ed. Over the years I have contemplated pursueing other carreer paths, but the only thing I've truly wanted to do since I was 12 was be a performing musician.

What was the weirdest thing to ever happen to you guys on tour?
That's hard to say. When we did our U.S. tour, we dodged several major storms. Example: We had spaghetti in Fargo & the weather was fine. They got 20 inches of snow the next day.

Any creepy, crazy or stalker-ey fans yet?

I'm not hot enough to have a stalker. It is probably better that way.

Have you ever written any songs that you are truly embarrassed by now?

Not really. Musicians change & develop. If people can't understand that, it is their problem.

If you could only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what
would it be?

That is not a fair question :) No one album can ever satisfy a music lover. I'll give you a list (I have thought about this):

Three "New Faces" Welcomed to the Label

Loveless Records Signs Local Favorite New Faces!

Loveless Records is proud to announce New Faces as the newest (and youngest!) members of the Loveless family.

Just a short ferry ride from Seattle, in the small town of Port Townsend, big things are happening. Three teenagers, lead singer/guitarist Nico Janssen (18), bassist Kyle Hove (17) and drummer Conor Sisk (16), make up the band New Faces, who have stepped into the scene impressing critics with their considerable musical talents.

But don’t let their ages fool you. Their sound has the undeniable maturity of veteran musicians. This is in large part due to their clever lyrics, unique rhythms, and Nico’s, deeper ranged vocals.

When New Faces became the winners of the 2008 Sound Off! competition, the Experience Music Project's 21-and-under battle-of-the-bands , they made a name for themselves on the Seattle music front.

Seattle P-I writer Athima Chansanchai said this about the New Faces performance after they won.
“Some bands you see for the first time and realize they're going to be big some day”

During the final round of Sound Off!, the CW's Underground created a documentary of the four finalists. Here is the New Faces documentary, before they won the entire competition.

Riding the wave of success after Sound Off!, New Faces landed performances at Seattle’s biggest summer music festivals – Bumbershoot and The Capitol Hill Block Party.

Loveless Executive and Film Extraordinaire, Sam Jones, Set to Release New Album

Accomplished cinematographer, photographer to the stars, and Loveless executive Sam Jones has yet another project in the works. His band The Revisionists will be releasing their debut album on Loveless Records on June 24th. Voyager One to Play at the 2008 Capitol Hill Block Party

The Capitol Hill Block Party is an annual music festival that draws upon and showcases the best indie and underground rock in the US, with a special focus on Northwest artists. What was once "an endearing street fair" is now Seattle's hottest Block Party!

Last year's lineup featured headliners Spoon, Silversun Pickups and Against Me! with supporting acts including loveles label-mates The Shackeltons.

Although the full lineup has not yet been announced, it's impressive so far. Voyager One will be playing with bands such as Devotchka, Vampire Weekend, Les Savy Fav, The Hold Steady, Girl Talk, Kimya Dawson, The Dodos, U.S.E., Grand Ole Party, Zeke, Thee Emergency, Jay Reatard and more!

You'll be able to see Voyager One and the rest of these acts for the low price of $18/day or $34 for the two-day pass. (What a screamin' deal!!!)

If you're in the seattle area (or even if you're not) the 2008 Block Party and Voyager One are definitely worth checking out.

The Shackeltons Play End of an Ear in Austin for "Record Store Day"

On Saturday, April 19, 2008, hundreds of independently owned music stores across the country celebrated “Record Store Day.”

After driving over 20 hours from Los Angeles with a quick stop in Phoenix, The Shackeltons arrived in Austin a little road weary but ready to play an in-stor

e at End of an Ear for Record Store Day.

Even though The Shackeltons looked and felt tired, they delivered another stellar performance and continue to win over the hearts of Austinites.

Today @ 1:00 CST (3:00 PST) they will be playing live on 90.5 KUT, The

University of Tes college station.

Then later tonight they’ll be headlining Soundcheck Magazine’s Party at The Beauty Bar in Austin before heading up to Dallas tomorrow for a show at the Double Wide.

Last friday, April 11, The Shackeltons played a show at Easy Street Records to a pretty packed house (especially considering their competition down the street at Seattle Center...His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama). Present from the Loveless family were other interns as well as Amy, John and Pete.

The Shackeltons played a really fun set, with intermittent jokes and banter, as well as, oddly enough, meeting other people from their hometown

of Chambersburg, PA.

A Conversation With Tom Brosseau

After his set at The Triple Door last Saturday, April 5, Tom Brosseau was kind enough to grant me an interview backstage and answer my questions, both serious and silly, about his life, his opinions and his music. (Thanks Tom!)

Katy: How did growing up in Grand Forks affect your music?

Tom: It's very easy, it's because the landscape I think plays an important part in my songwriting, and being that Grand Forks, North Dakota in general is very flat and desolate, gold-colored in the summer and very white in the winter, and very cold in general in weather, I think that it all sort of had an effect on me, and because of that has had an effect on my writing style. At times I can be very dark, very cold a little bit, and then other times I can come around and be very warm.

K: Maybe that might explain why [as you said during your set] you don't have so many uplifting songs?

T: Yes I think so. You know, the other thing too, is that there wasn't a whole lot in the wintertime. If you didn't play hockey or sports or have any extra-curricular activities you were probably most often in your house watching TV or something, so I think you kind of had to develop your imagination, and that's what I did. I'd think about everything and think about different things and different scenarios. I always thought in terms of movies, like different characters, like what I could do and how i could shoot movies. So my imagination was very active and very wild, and I could never really put a cap on it, and it's all because I come from North Dakota, I think, and also because I was alone a lot. In that situation, you're kind of forced to be creative, in a way. You're kind of forced to find what your hobbies are and where your interests lie. You don't have the same things that other kids have like, say in California, or Los Angeles, you know? There's so much to do that you don't know what to do.

K: What musicians have most influenced you over the years?

T: Well the big ones are the old bands from the thirties and forties like The Ink Spots. They were what I always listened to when I was growing up. Bob Dylan was pretty big. I never listened to Neil Young, but people sometimes tell me I've got a voice like him. And, then, just people like Woody Guthrie, but the biggest one is probably Guy Lombardo, very kind of simple music from our parents' generation, Les Paul and Mary Ford, you know, songs that are like just over two minutes long. I mean, I love to listen to these songs, and they're very uplifitng, and very light, and so very bubble-gum. My stuff is so completely different, but that's stuff that I really like to pull from and that I always like to go back to. I never listened to popular music when I was young. My brother did, though.

K: Who do you enjoy listening to now?

T: A little bit more in depth in the folk circuit maybe, maybe also in the classical world. I listen to a lot of classical music. There's a great cellist named Pablo Casals that I really like listening to. Also Yo Yo Ma, and Yo La Tengo..sometimes I get the two mixed up [laughs]. I love Frank Black and the Pixies..I'm a big fan of that stuff too. The big record I have in my car at home is a really cheesy record by David Gilmore, who is the guitarist of Pink Floyd. That's what I have right now.

K: Do you come from a musical family?

T: Not trained, but they all can play music, and they all did play music. We always had that around, so that was something that was always there. It didn't make me feel unique, it didn't make me feel better or different than anyone else, but we always had music around, we always played music, and we always sang together.

K: Do you play any instruments other than your guitar and harmonica?

T: The piano just a little bit, I'm not trained. And, you know, some people might say that I don't even know how to play the guitar and I'd be the first to agree with them. I'm not a musician, that's the thing.

K: Why do you say that?

T: Well, a musician is..umm..not me. I'm more of a writer, I sit and think about words for hours and about songs for hours. And I'm not a musician. I don't practice music. I don't practice scales. I don't know the cords. I don't want to know the chords. I don't want to know the scales. I don't want to know the structure. I don't want to know the timing. I'm not concerned with any of that stuff, and I don't really want to put any time into it. My motivation lies in thinking about words, and it takes a very, very long time.

K: So you're more along the lines of Ginsberg, whose poetry happened to be set to music sometimes?

T: Yes, exactly, it's just by sheer coincidence or sheer luck or something that I also to play music. And I never consider myself a songwriter, and I'm singer-songwriter, but you can't tell that to anybody because people always have to classify you, there always has to be some kind of vehicle, otherwise it's not interesting.

K: How do you feel about how country music has evolved in modern pop culture?

T: Well, I would first like to say that you see on country music TV, or whatever that station is, that they've probably worked very hard. I'm less judgmental than I used to be. I think that if you had asked me this question a year ago, I would have said the guys look like girls nowadays in country music...and to an extent I still think that. I just think that we're still more concerned with image these days, and that they're more concerned with selling sex, and kind of selling what these people look like, and the hairdos and things like that. But if you take a look at some of those old country stars from back in the day...it's hard to say it, but some of them were just not good looking, you know? But it didn't matter. What they were doing was performing, and what they were selling were their records by how they were making people feel. So what I can say about country music today is that I just don't listen to it, but I know that people work very hard on what they do, and I try to pass less judgment.

K: What do you think is going to happen to folk music in the years to come?

T: Folk music will never die. Folk music has been around forever. Classical music is essentially folk music. Folk music is music that tells a tale, whether it's in words, or by structure or by double bows or...that's folk music. It's folk music I think that will always live and the other music that will die out, like disco did, and things like that. Folk music will always be there..I don't know if it will ever be popular on its own. I think there has to be some variant of it like freak-folk or like the anti-folk movement with Suzanne Vega or Beck when he first came on. When he first came on, Beck was kind of like a weird version of folk, and then it started to kind of come back around again, especially freak-folk, which I don't really get but that seems to be working. I think that if you ask people what folk music is, I don't know if they could give you the right answer, I don't even know if I could give you the right answer. But I think it [folk music] is very indicative of what has been happening socially, politically, nationally. A lot of people think that folk music only goes back to the depression era, where somebody's talking about getting a fair price for their crops, or on strike, but that's the whole point of folk music, it has a message to it. And I think that [folk artists] are kind of laughed at in popular music, but at one point, popular music was folk music.

K: Are there any musical movements or genres that you...let's say..."struggle to appreciate"?

T: No, I think that it's all connected. And again, I'm less judgmental now. I think that if you had asked me this a year ago, I would have said that I don't listen to rap, but that's not true. I listen to rap, I like rap. There is some rap that I don't like. There are some messages that I don't like, but when gangster rap was first very popular it was very interesting because people were saying things for the first time in a different way. Like, there was this record called "A Hundred Miles and Running" that was very imaginative and sort of painted a tale of what it was like to live in a particular place, and what it was like to deal with the cops, and what it was like to be black, but it's also very interesting because it's a very similar message to what lead belly was talking about in "Bourgeois Blues": about being black and living in Washington DC, and so I was glad to see that. There's always an aspect of folk music that is alive in other music...but no, there's not one particular music that I think is bad or anything like that. But I'm less judgmental, I don't know what changed in me, but I like anything, I'll listen to anything...even 80's music.

K: Even 80's music?

T: Yeah, probably a lot now. I've kind of come to terms with it. There's a lot of credibility there, you know? The eighties are coming back in our fashion these days, and it's crazy because the eighties are back and they haven't even been gone for that long.

K: What is your favorite book?

T: My favorite book is probably..well, I know that there are so many that I have not read, but one of my favorite books right now is probably The Catcher in the Rye...but I'm going to have give you two favorite books, The Catcher in the Rye and a journal by Hemingway called Under Kilimanjaro, so it would probably be J.D. Salinger or Hemingway.

K: Do you have a favorite children's book?

T: Yes, I do, but I don't know the name of it, but it's about these butterflies that eventually come around..they crawl up something and they find out that nothing is at the top, and it's very sad. It makes you think, and messages like that, when you're a child, you probably can't grasp, but they're always with you. That's what's interesting about children's stories. They're very distinctive and very beautiful and lovely and evil at times, and I think that they're great because we're very impressionable at that age and they're things that we can always go back to.

K: What is the best concert you've ever been to?

T: It was maybe this guy named Grant Lee Phillips, who was in this band called Grant Lee Buffalo. He was playing onstage with a string quartet. This would have been at Largo in 2004. It was really great.

K: If you were to choose a major movie director to direct your biopic, who would it be? Who would play you?

T: Well, it would have to be David Lynch, if you could consider him a major director. As for who would play me, well, maybe a very old english either..woman or man..or maybe not even a woman or man, maybe a dog or something.

K: Have you always wanted to be a musician or were you set on another career path at some point?

T: I never wanted to be a musician, I always wanted to be either a fireman or Indiana Jones.

K: Maybe Indiana Jones can play you.

T: In my biopic? Harrison Ford?

K: Yeah, maybe he could play you, or just be an extra or something?

T: [laughs] Maybe he'd play my dad.

K: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

T: Superpower? Maybe to read minds. But I already feel like some people can already do that, can't they Mary?

Mary Jones [Tom's Manager]: Read minds? I know sometimes I can.

T: That would probably be the thing, to be able to know that you could definitely know what someone else is thinking.

K: Controllably, or all the time?

T: I don't know, just kind of get inside their heads a little bit, but I know some are already good at that, you know, by going off of people's facial expressions and how they act, like poker players or something like that and some people are just no good at it.

K: Where do you most wish to travel?

T: That I've never been to? Hawaii, I've never been to Hawaii. Did you mean to play or..?

K: Anything.

T: Well then Hawaii, I'd really like to go to Hawaii. The other place I'd really like to go to is Alaska.

K: Have you ever tried to grow a woman from the ground?

T: Recently, I guess I have. ..."And did it work?"

K: [laughs] And did it work?

T: Yes, I would say so.

K: Are you considering a change in musical direction, or are you going to stick to your roots?

T: Well, I'll never be able to leave my roots. Your roots are what they are, whether you like them or not. You can change your appearance, but you'll always be what you are. But, I'm always one for taking sabbaticals and trying something new. I think you have to do that sometimes. You have to do things that you're good at, but you also have to do things that you don't know how to do very well. I think that you have to keep on challenging yourself at least to keep things interesting and kind of retain that sort of heat in the fire, so I think that I'll have to do something different someday..it won't be rap, it won't be anything quirky, but it will be something maybe more modern.

Carrie Akre, one of our artists, has recently given birth to a beautiful baby boy. Orion Alexander Lund was born on March 25th at 2:15AM. He is 18 inches long and weighs in at 7lbs 6oz. Carrie begins performing again starting May 13 at The Abbey in Seattle.
